Bicycle baristas ride around the cities and towns selling hot or iced coffee, made from instant packets, sold for no more than 5,000 Rupiah, about $.30 USD. This becomes a social activity drinking coffee with your neighbors on the sidewalk, and have a little chat with the seller.
I found this bicycle barista, locally called starling, selling directly outside of a Starbucks. I wondered if he had ever tried Starbucks, which cost about 60,000 Rupiah, 12 times the price! I asked, and I found out that the seller, and his brother, had never tried anything from Starbucks.
Why are these bicycle baristas in Indonesia called starlings? The "Star" is short for Starbucks, while the "ling" being short for keliling, meaning mobile. They move locations anytime, depending where there are customers.
I invited the brothers, one of whom sells coffee directly outside of Starbucks, the other a parking attendant and kitchen staff, to come in and order anything they want. What did they order? Mocha frappuccino, Green tea frappuccino, chocolate cake, and a New York cheesecake.
The whole experience made me happy. I hope you enjoy watching this Jakarta vlog, as much as I did making it.
